Limited by Customer Size

Shopify Analytics only gives you results for 2,50,000 customers. But if you have more users, what should you do? Go with Google Analytics, and you will be able to overcome this limitation.

How to add Google Analytics to Shopify: A step-by-step breakdown

Step 1: Check if you have Google Analytics enabled already

There are two telltale signs that you already have Google Analytics enabled on your Shopify store. 

Sign 1: Google Analytics Tracking Code

  1. Go to your Shopify Admin.
  2. Then click on the Online Store and go to Preferences.
  3. There is a Google Analytics section here. You’ll find a box in this section.

If the box isn’t empty and you see a tracking code starting with UA- in the box, then Google Analytics is already enabled. 

Sign 2: Google Analytics Tracking Tag

If the box is empty and only has Paste your code from Google here written, go to Themes.

Then, go to Actions and click on Edit code

In the Layout section, go to {/} theme.liquid and check if there are any Google Analytics tracking tags like ga.js, dc.js, gtag.js, analytics.js. If these tags are present, then Google Analytics is already enabled.

If none of the two signs are present, then Google Analytics isn’t already enabled, and you can go to Step 2.

Step 2: Create a Google Account and Google Analytics Account

If you already have a Google Account, such as a Gmail account, you don’t need to create a new Google Account, and you can skip to Step 3. You can use your Gmail account for Google Analytics.

Step 3: Add Google Analytics to Shopify

To enable Google Analytics, you must create a Universal Analytics property in Google and add it to your Shopify store.

After you sign in to your Google Analytics account and select Admin, you’ll see that your Google Analytics profile will have three separate columns. These are the Account column, the Property column, and the View column.

  1. Check the Account column and select the right account

  3. In the Property name box, enter a property name. Choose your preferred reporting time and currency.

  5. After doing this, enable Create a Universal Analytics property and enter the URL of your website in the Website URL box.

  1. Select the Create a Universal Analytics property only option and then click Next.

  1. Enter your business information and click Create.

  • Copy the Universal Analytics property and open your Shopify admin in a new tab
  • From there, select Online store  and then Preferences
  • Paste the code you copied in the Google Analytics account field

Step 4: Turn on e-commerce tracking

With Google Analytics, you can get information with two different degrees of detail. 

If you want revenue and transaction data, turn on basic e-commerce tracking.

If you want much more data about those who visit your online store, turn on enhanced e-commerce tracking.

How to turn on basic e-commerce tracking

Go to your Google Analytics account by clicking here and go to Admin.

Look for the View column. There, you should click on Ecommerce Settings.

Click on Enable Ecommerce and turn it ON from OFF.

How to turn on enhanced e-commerce tracking

  1. Go to Shopify admin, then go to Online Store and click on Preferences.
  2. Go to the Google Analytics section and click on the checkbox beside Use Enhanced Ecommerce to select it. If you’re using an old version of Google Analytics, you might have to click on Upgrade to the latest version to upgrade Google Analytics and enable enhanced e-commerce tracking.
  3. Click on Save to save your settings so that Shopify sends your website data to Google Analytics.
  4. Then go to your Google Analytics account and click on Admin.
  5. Go to the View column, where you will find Ecommerce settings. Click on it.
